An utterly charming mix of live action and animation, Marcel The Shell With Shoes On tells the story of a little mollusc (Slate) who lives with his grandmother (Rossellini) in an Air BnB house and makes friends with the documentary filmmaker (Fleischer Camp) who moves in there.
Adapted from a series of video short films that deservedly went viral, Marcel… follows the little shell as he attempts to find out what happened to his missing family, a quest that leads to him becoming an internet hit, much to his horror.
It’s a movie about being connected, love, family and community that is so adorable and beautifully written it will reduce the most hard-hearted viewer to a quivering pile of sobbing mush. While it is possibly too thoughtful and gentle for little children (though they, like everyone else, will fall in love with Marcel and his grandma), older kids and grown ups should take this little shell and his lovely movie to their hearts.
Is Marcel The Shell With Shoes On suitable for kids? Here are our parents’ notes...
There are a couple of scenes with slightly rude humour.
SPOILER ALERT Marcel’s grandmother dies off screen and some scenes following this are very sad and may upset viewers of any age.
