Proof that a clever idea doesn’t necessarily lead to a good movie. It all begins well as students Jones (Headey), Derrick (Marsden) and Travis (Reedus) decide to start a rumour and track its progress as part of a college project. So at a party, when Derrick spots beautiful (and very drunk) rich kid Naomi (Hudson) – well known for her refusal to have sex – making out with her boyfriend Beau (Jackson), he suggests to his pals that the gossip they spread is that Beau and Naomi slept together. Soon the scandalous news explodes around campus with the story getting wilder and wilder until Naomi (who doesn’t remember much of anything) believes it and accuses Beau of rape.
It’s at this point it all goes horribly pear-shaped, as preposterous twists and ridiculous motives turn a potentially gripping and thought-provoking movie into an utterly daft and slightly dubious one in which any moral point is completely lost. For older teens only, but only if there really is nothing else available in the DVD store.

Is Gossip suitable for kids? Here are our parents’ notes...

None. The rape theme isn’t suitable for younger viewers, though.
