Back in the 1980s, all little boys wanted Transformers (in fact, thanks to a new animated TV series and the live action movies, they still do). Initially featured in a TV cartoon series that was really an extended advertisement for the toys, Transformers were those robots that could bend and change into, well, other robots. Or trains, planes and other vehicles. That’s about all they did, but in the series and this film they got to talk too, and were divided into good robots (Autobots) and bad ones (Decepticons).
The plot here has the Autobots trying to protect their planet from the Decepticons, and particularly an evil being called Unicron (voiced by Orson Welles, who completed vocal work on the film shortly before his death in 1985). It’s more exciting than you would expect as the battle begins – and it’s also quite violent in places as the robots are melted, blown to smithereens or squished into little pieces. Not one for very small viewers, then.

Fans of the series and toys may be upset by the death of a major character as they won’t expect it (he is still alive in all other versions of Transformers).
