The AE of the title stands for ‘After Earth’, as our little planet has been obliterated by some nasty aliens in this animated adventure. Some humans have survived, and one in particular, Cale (Damon), is pretty important as he holds the key to the survival of the human race – it seems he has the map of a ship called the Titan tattooed on his hand, and if he and a group of space travellers can find it, humanity will be saved. Hurrah!
Made by former Disney animator Don Bluth (who also did The Land Before Time and An American Tail), this has some dazzling animated sequences and breathtaking backdrops, but is a bit too dark and serious for younger viewers. Teens disappointed by the newer Star Wars movies will find something to like though, as this is a fascinating space adventure, filled with nice vocal performances (the cast also includes Drew Barrymore, John Leguizamo and Nathan Lane), action, adventure and icky aliens.
