Computer game character Sonic The Hedgehog is back for a second adventure that picks up where the first left off.

Sonic (Schwartz) is living with sheriff Tom (Marsden) and his wife as a sort of adopted son/pet, but soon their idyllic life is disturbed by the return of Doctor Robotnik (Carrey), who now has partner-in-crime Knuckles (Elba) along for the ride.

They’re on the hunt for a big green magic gem, and soon Sonic and pal Tails (introduced at the end of the first movie) are in hot pursuit around the world, which (sort of) explains why the movie includes side trips to Hawaii and Siberia.

It’s all brightly coloured, zippy and silly, with some gamer easter eggs and pop culture jokes thrown in for accompanying adults who may be complaining that the story is a bit of a muddle. Fans of the first film will be entertained (though it does go on a little long), they’ll love seeing Sonic and Tails – and even Knuckles –together, and for everyone else, the chance to see Jim Carrey going completely over the top once again as Robotnik is almost worth the price of admission alone.

Is Sonic The Hedgehog 2 suitable for kids? Here are our parents’ notes...

Some young children may find Dr Robotnik (who was also in the first film) scary.

There are scenes in which Sonic and his friends are in danger, but most perilous moments also feature comedy so children should not be too concerned.

There is also some mild language and rude humour.
