So, in reverse order, from 10 to 1…

A beautifully animated Japanese movie story of bullying, love and friendships.
Honourable mention: Wonder, starring Jacob Tremblay and Julia Roberts, that skilfully tackles a similar subject.
-
Wonder Woman (12A)
Gal Gadot and director Patty Jenkins reinvent the Wonder Woman legend in this terrific comic book blockbuster.
Honourable mention: Logan, the grown-up (it’s a 15) final outing for Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.
-
Sing (U)
Adorable animated musical comedy featuring terrific vocal performances from Matthew McConaughey, Aaron Egerton and Reece Witherspoon.
Honourable mention: For more cute animal fun (and a toe-tapping bull/horse dance off) check out Ferdinand.
-
The Lego Batman Movie (U)
After a scene-stealing performance in The LEGO Movie, Batman gets his own animated LEGO adventure and it’s a hoot.
-
A Monster Calls (12A)
Released on New Year’s Day 2017, this visually stunning, heartbreaking movie is based on Patrick Ness’s children’s novel.
-
Star Wars: The Last Jedi (12A)
Episode VIII brings fresh life (and cuddly porgs!) to the Star Wars saga, and Mark Hamill gives the best performance of his career as Luke.
-
Spider-Man: Homecoming (12A)
Tom Holland takes over as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in this terrific, fun adventure, the best Spidey movie so far.
-
Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (U)
A kids’ movie that’s fun, silly, hilarious for parents and kids and without some well-meaning moral? Yes! And you can bet there’s tons of daft toilet humour, too.
-
Thor: Ragnarok (12A)
The third Thor movie is not only the best one, but it’s also the funniest Marvel movie to date. Brilliant stuff.
Honourable mention: Earlier in the year Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2 gave us lots of laughs, too, plus it had Kurt Russell as a god…
-
Paddington 2 (U)
Hugh Grant dressed as a nun. Hugh Bonneville doing the splits. Joanna Lumley, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters and the world’s most adorable, marmalade-loving bear. The number one movie of the year couldn’t ever have been anything else, could it?
