Animated TV show SpongeBob SquarePants has developed a huge following, among kids of all ages, who love the brightly coloured sea sponge and his underwater pals, Patrick (the pudgy starfish), Mr Krabs (the miserly crab who runs the restaurant, the Krusty Krab, where SpongeBob works) and Squidward (the grumpy squid), and adults, who pick up on the more grown-up humour littered throughout the series. Like The Simpsons, it is fun for all, and this feature-length movie, while a little stretched out over an hour and a half, is packed full of fun.

The story is simple: our little hero SpongeBob has to leave his home town of Bikini Bottom to track down King Neptune’s stolen crown. But it’s his adventures along the way that make this such a treat for fans, from a hilarious appearance by David ‘Baywatch’ Hasselhoff to the jaw-dropping sight of Patrick in fishnet stockings and suspenders (not a moment, perhaps, to explain to very junior members of the audience).

Is The Spongebob Squarepants Movie suitable for kids? Here are our parents’ notes...

Little ones may be scared of bad guy Dennis (voiced by Alec Baldwin).
