While a school prom is only a recent addition to British schools, going to a high school dance has been a rite of passage for Americans (and one often depicted in their TV series and movies) for decades. Now Disney invites us all to see a (sanitised) version of what happens when teens get dressed up and dance the night away in this sweet little movie that’s almost as appealing to adults as kids.

The story follows a group of kids as they prepare for prom night, including Nova (Teegarden), a little miss perfect who needs a date and finds herself hating and then falling for school bad boy Jesse (McDonell) when he is forced to help the prom decoration committee as punishment for his latest infraction. Hearts are broken, corsages are bought and pinned, lovable character Lloyd (Nicholas Braun) tries and fails to ask out his prom date in a series of wacky ways, and it all ends up being a night to remember for all of them. Lovely stuff that will enchant tweenage girls who will then demand their own starry night, complete with limo and ball gown.

Is Prom suitable for kids? Here are our parents’ notes...
