A sweet follow-up to My Girl, once again featuring a cute central performance from Chlumsky as Vada. Now thirteen years old and settled with her dad (Aykroyd) and stepmum (Jamie Lee Curtis), she is given a school project to write about someone who has achieved something but whom she has never met – and decides to investigate her mother, who died during Vada’s birth. Filled with misgivings, her dad allows Vada to visit her uncle in LA, knowing that she will spend the time there finding out about the mum she never knew.
With another child actress in the lead this could have been stomach-churningly sappy, but thanks to a strong performance from Chlumsky and some nice twists of the plot, it’s an enjoyable if slightly slow movie. Very young viewers will probably be a bit bored, so this is best enjoyed by fans of the first movie.
