A sixties sitcom no one remembers is updated into a forgettable nineties family film, as Martin the Martian (Lloyd) crash-lands in California and ends up taking refuge in down-on-his-luck TV reporter Tim O’Hara’s (Daniels) living room. While there are a few neat special-effect gimmicks (Martin can shrink his spaceship, and anyone inside it, and have Honey, I Shrunk the Kids-style adventures), the opening gag on Mars looks cheap and the running joke of Martin’s spacesuit Zoot (which talks) is irritating rather than amusing.
Dad may be entertained by bitchy reporter Hurley and dippy gal Daryl Hannah’s revealing outfits; kids, however, will be yawning before the opening credits have finished.
