Christian Slater is George Kuffs in this teen crime drama – a twenty-one-year-old with no money who leaves his pregnant girlfriend (Jovovich) to head for San Francisco, where he hopes his older brother (Bruce Boxleitner) may help him out. Unfortunately, big brother – who works as a ‘Patrol Special’ alongside the police – is gunned down, and Kuffs has to decide whether to track down and wreak revenge on his sibling’s killer or work alongside the police.
It’s like a teen version of Beverly Hills Cop that never quite decides if it wants to be funny or deadly serious. Certainly the language and violence is on the serious side, but Slater also has to talk directly to the audience, suggesting that this should have had some knowing funny bits, too. What happened to them is perhaps the crime that Kuffs should have been investigating.
