Alvin and his squeaky-voiced pals are back for a fourth adventure, and this time they are teamed with bratty teen Miles (Green). It seems that Miles’s mum is dating the chipmunks’ ‘dad’ Dave (Lee), and when the couple head off for a romantic weekend in Miami, the boys go in hot pursuit, worried that Dave is going to propose. Yes, the whole premise of this film is that the Alvin and pals want to ruin Dave’s relationship prospects – isn’t that just adorable? (Erm, no.)

Dodgy premise aside, this turns into a furry road trip as they get thrown off the plane, incurring the wrath of air marshal Suggs (Hale), and have to make their way to the Sunshine State by road. Will the chipmunks bond with their potential stepbrother? Will there be high-pitched chipmunky versions of hit songs en route? Little fans of the singing rodents will be entertained by the sheer cuteness of it all, but a dearth of gags mean this just isn’t as chucklesome as it should have been.

Is Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Road Chip suitable for kids? Here are our parents’ notes...

Very small children may be upset when one of the chipmunks is hit by a car but he is fine.
