Happy Mother’s Day: Meet the movies’ best mum: Sigourney Weaver in Aliens!

It’s Mother’s Day in the UK, so I’ve been thinking about the Best Mum In The Movies. There are quite a few memorable mums – Mrs Bates in Psycho, Piper Laurie in Carrie, Demi Moore in Striptease, Julia Roberts in Erin Brokovich to name a few – who wouldn’t win best parenting awards, but when I think of kind, loving movie mums, they tend to be in weepies like Lorenzo’s Oil or Steel Magnolias and no one wants to be sad on Mother’s Day! So, after much thought, here’s my vote for the movies’ best mum. She’s tough but loving. She protects a child that isn’t her own, sacrifices herself for the greater good… and she says one of the best Mother lines in the history of movies…

“Get away from her, you bitch!”

Yes, she does leave her own daughter on earth to travel into space (though in flashbacks we see how devastated she is when she returns later than planned to find her daughter has grown old and died), but she does save the world from aliens and even throws herself into a fiery pit so the alien inside her doesn’t get out (and that’s true mummy love). Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley as the movies’ best mum. After all, who wouldn’t want a mum who could fire a gun and kick alien ass when needed?

Happy mother’s day!
