Edward Scissorhands
(PG)Dianne Wiest is the mother we all wish we could be, who takes in young Edward (Johnny Depp, back when he was still cute) in this unusual, beautiful fairy tale from director Tim Burton.

Up
(U)There are so many Pixar movies that could brighten up anyone’s day (including, of course, the Toy Story and Finding Nemo movies) but this one is extra lovely, especially during the absolutely heartbreaking sequence that tells the story of grumpy old man Carl’s life with his wife Ellie.

The Princess Bride
(U)One of my favourite movies of all time, this witty, hilarious and terrifically performed romantic adventure is a timeless fairytale of good versus evil. Mandy Patinkin, Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Peter Falk, Wallace Shawn and Chris Sarandon are all unmissable.

Beauty and the Beast (1991)
(U)There are lots of classic Disney animated movies that are five star films (Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Dumbo, Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs and Bambi among them) but with the live action adaptation currently in cinemas, I pick 1991’s pretty Beauty And The Beast as the perfect Mothering Sunday nostalgia trip.

Frozen
(U)Little girls all love this movie, but there are quite a few grown up ones who adore it too. And bet you didn’t know Mum sings ‘Let It Go’ while she is doing the vacuuming, did you?

Grease
(PG)An unforgettable soundtrack, those fifties dance moves, John Travolta in a leather jacket, and Olivia Newton John in shiny leggings and red lippy (“Tell me about it, stud”) – a classic high school musical (with a cast who were all far too old for high school, of course).

Say Anything
(15)Any mum who has seen this movie hopes their son to turn out like Lloyd (John Cusack), the protective, sincere, funny and adorable centre of this teen romance. Cusack has never been better, and there is lovely support from John Mahoney and Lili Taylor, too.

Big
(PG)Tom Hanks was never more adorable than as Josh, the 12-year-old boy who wishes at a fairground to be big and wakes the next morning in the body of a grown man. New York is at its most magical in this funny, heart-warming family tale.
